They’re now taking advantage of that trust with a convincing fake Windows 11 update scam that’s designed to look just like the real thing.
The scam uses a webpage that closely resembles an official Microsoft support page, with familiar branding, layout, and wording.
At first glance, everything appears legitimate.
The page offers what looks like a normal Windows 11 update and prompts users to download it.
But instead of installing a genuine Microsoft update, the download installs malware onto the device.
What’s particularly concerning is how sophisticated this attack has become.
The malicious file is built using legitimate development tools and packaged to appear authentic, complete with Microsoft-style labels and file properties. Because of this, even some security software may not immediately recognise it as malicious.
Cyber attacks have evolved significantly.
Years ago, fake update scams were often easy to identify. Poor design, spelling mistakes, and suspicious links were common warning signs.
Today’s scams are much more polished.
Attackers understand that software updates are something people rarely question. Employees see an update prompt, install it, and continue working without a second thought.
That habit is usually harmless.
However, when attackers successfully imitate trusted software and familiar processes, routine behaviour can quickly become a security vulnerability.
The safest way to install Windows 11 updates is through the built-in Windows Update feature in Settings.
Avoid downloading updates from links in emails, pop-up messages, or unfamiliar websites.
If you ever need to manually download Windows software, always go directly to Microsoft’s official website rather than relying on third-party links.
It’s also worth reminding your team of one simple habit:
