Maybe 2022 doesn’t look quite like it does in the old sci-fi films. But this year’s technology predictions show just how many cool new features we already take for granted.
Remember those old science fiction films that made such wild predictions for life in the twenty-first century? Flying cars, robot butlers, silver jumpsuits … it’s a space-age vision that’s light years away from our real life.
But there are plenty of things we take for granted today that would have seemed like science fiction just a few years ago. We might not have flying cars just yet, but self-driving ones are real. Maybe you don’t have a robot butler, but it’s still pretty cool that you can get a robot to vacuum your floor.
This year’s business technology predictions contain some pretty exciting stuff. Here we’ll outline a few of the ones we think are most relevant to you and your team.
More automation
Automation is already a feature of the modern workplace, and it’s often underused. In an earlier post, we explored how you can use it right now to make your everyday working life easier.
Compatibility used to be a major barrier to automation, but it’s now possible to get most software to communicate with most other software. This means it’s only getting easier and more intuitive to automate those boring, predictable tasks that eat up your time and energy.
Accessible AI
Not that long ago, artificial intelligence was the kind of cutting-edge technology that was reserved for big global corporations. This has already changed. AI is an integral part of the software used by all kinds of businesses and individuals, and this trend, too, is only going to increase.
Do you have a smartphone? Use Gmail? Do you watch the shows Netflix recommends for you? You’re already interacting with AI every single day, and these examples are just the tip of the iceberg.
The new normal
The outbreak of COVID-19 changed the way we work. Home and hybrid working became the norm, and both technology and management had to move fast to keep up. And it’s fair to say that, after two years, we’ve all adjusted pretty well to the change.
While being shut in our homes is a thing of the past (we hope), the benefits of hybrid working mean it’s unlikely to go away any time soon. Many of the previous logistical and security problems with flexible working have been addressed. On top of that, plenty of people are happier, healthier and more productive when they can work from home at least some of the time.
Better voice search technology
“Alexa, set the timer for twenty minutes!” “Alexa, play my favourite song!” You can hear commands like this in homes all over the country.
A fairly recent innovation, voice search is already an important part of our everyday lives. And no wonder: whether you’re working, cooking or just don’t want to move from the sofa, it’s so easy to ask Alexa for the answer you need. We predict that voice search technology will keep developing and improving in 2022.
