When was the last time you thought about how you log in to your accounts?
Or how secure those logins really are?
For years, we’ve relied on passwords. But let’s be honest – passwords are a pain. They’re easy to forget, often reused, and a prime target for cyber criminals.
That’s where passkeys come in. And now, Windows is finally making them much easier to use.
Think of it as a modern replacement for your password.
Instead of typing in a string of characters that can be stolen or guessed, a passkey lets you sign in using something far safer – your face, fingerprint, or a secure PIN tied to your device.
Behind the scenes, passkeys use advanced cryptography. There’s no password for hackers to steal because each passkey has two parts:
One stays securely on your device
The other stays with the service you’re logging into
They work together like a lock and key. The key never leaves your pocket, and that makes it nearly impossible for phishing scams to trick you.
Until now, using passkeys in Windows has felt clunky. You often had to rely on third-party apps or websites, and setting them up wasn’t straightforward.
But that’s changing.
Microsoft has started rolling out new features in Windows 11 to make passkeys much easier to use and manage.
Here’s what’s new:
Integration with 1Password: You’ll be able to sync your passkeys directly with 1Password, making logins faster and more secure.
Support for other password managers: Microsoft has released tools that allow other password managers to integrate more smoothly with Windows.
In short, your passkeys will now work better with the tools you already use to protect your business.
This is more than just a technical update. It’s part of Microsoft’s larger move toward a password-free future.
The Microsoft Authenticator app is already phasing out its password management feature. Passkeys will soon become the default way to sign in to Microsoft accounts and supported services.
For businesses, this is a step forward in both security and simplicity.
No more forgotten passwords
No more risky password sharing
Stronger protection against phishing attacks
These new features are still being tested in the latest Windows 11 preview build, but the direction is clear: Passkeys are the future.
Now’s the time to start preparing your business.
Review your authentication tools and password managers
Identify devices and systems ready for passkey adoption
Educate your team on the benefits of passwordless logins
Passwords are on their way out – and that’s a good thing for your organisation.
Passkeys offer stronger protection, simpler access, and fewer security headaches. With Microsoft leading the charge, now’s the time to explore how passkeys can fit into your wider IT strategy.
