A third of all data loss is caused by problems with backups

Losing access to your business’s data – even temporarily – can feel like a nightmare straight out of a horror movie.

Data backup tools are designed to create copies of your data and store them securely. When things go wrong, recovery tools use these copies to restore your lost files.

So, if your business already has backup and recovery tools in place, you might think your data is safe… but this isn’t always the case.

A recent report reveals that some backup tools aren’t as reliable as they should be. Shockingly, a third of all data losses stem from backup-related issues. When businesses attempt to recover their data, they often find it’s either missing or corrupted.

But it’s not just corrupted backups you need to worry about.

One of the biggest current threats to businesses is ransomware – a type of malicious software (or “malware”) that locks you out of your own files unless you pay a ransom to regain access.

The report also found that half of the businesses using backup tools still ended up paying ransoms to recover their files, because it was faster than using their own recovery tools. What’s even worse? Only a small percentage of those who paid the ransom were able to fully recover their data.

Backup tools are supposed to protect your data, so why do so many businesses find them unreliable?

Often, it’s due to improper setup. Even when configured correctly, backups need to be regularly verified to ensure they’re still saving your files as intended.

Moreover, older backup and recovery tools can struggle to keep up with the increasingly sophisticated nature of modern cyber attacks.

Implementing and maintaining a reliable backup system can be complex. That’s where IT experts like us come in, ensuring your backup tools function correctly every single day.

We can also add advanced safeguards, such as continuous data protection (CDP), which saves changes to your files in real time. This allows you to restore your data from just before an attack or data loss incident.

This is a service we provide to businesses like yours daily. If you’d like us to help you as well, please get in touch.
