AI That Works for Everyone in Windows 11

More Good News for Accessibility in Windows 11

Have you ever opened a document or presentation and realised half the information was locked away in an image or graphic that didn’t make sense?

Maybe it was a complex chart, or a photo with key details but no caption to explain what’s going on.

Microsoft is working on something that could remove moments like that – especially for people with accessibility needs.

It’s testing a new Windows 11 feature called Describe Image, powered by local AI built directly into your computer.

How IT works

On Copilot+ PCs (the new generation of Windows devices that use AI directly on your device), you’ll find Describe Image in the Click to Do menu.

When you select it, your PC instantly generates a detailed description of whatever image, chart, or graph you’re viewing.

The first time you use it, your computer sets up the AI models it needs. After that, everything runs locally, meaning no images or data are sent to the cloud. Your information stays private, secure, and on your device.

Currently, the feature is being tested with Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel who have Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft has confirmed that AMD and Intel Copilot+ devices will also receive it soon.

Why this matters

On the surface, this might sound like a small update – but the impact is significant.

Imagine a team member with a visual impairment being able to understand a complex graph in seconds, without needing someone else to interpret it.

Or a busy employee scanning a lengthy report, instantly getting context from a set of images without switching apps or asking for clarification.

This is the kind of thoughtful improvement that helps technology work better for everyone.

Accessibility is productivity

Accessibility isn’t just about compliance or ticking a box. It’s about inclusion, efficiency, and giving every employee equal access to information.

When your people can understand, contribute, and collaborate without barriers, your whole business benefits.

Accessibility tools like Describe Image can:

  • Boost productivity by reducing delays and confusion

  • Empower independence for employees with visual or cognitive impairments

  • Support collaboration across teams with different needs

  • Enhance company culture by showing commitment to inclusion

And because Describe Image works locally, it brings the added benefit of privacy and security – key considerations for every business handling sensitive information.

Strengthening Your Business Through Inclusive Technology

Windows 11’s new Describe Image feature shows how technology can adapt to people, not the other way around.

Accessible tech helps everyone perform at their best and strengthens your business values.
